His Royal Highness King Charles III and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese showed exceptional courage by authorizing Australia’s Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion. Triggered by the mass shooting at Bondi Beach, the Commission examines drivers of Jew-hatred, “ideologically and religiously motivated extremism”, and social cohesion, effectively turning the spotlight on Political Islam without explicitly naming it.
In Islamic doctrine, such scrutiny constitutes slander (ghiba) and blasphemy. Reliance of the Traveller (a key Sharia manual) defines slander broadly: “mentioning anything concerning a person that he would dislike” (r2.2) or noticing something “bad” (g2.5). Questioning Islam’s political aspects – like jihad and the treatment of non-Muslims in general – or Mohammed’s example violates commands to “enter into Islam completely” (Koran 2:208) and accept decisions by Allah and his messenger without option (Koran 33:36). Supremacy doctrine demands Islam prevail over all religion (Koran 48:28).
The prescribed punishment is severe. Novelist Sir Salman Rushdie faced a fatwa and near-fatal stabbing for fictional engagement with Islamic texts. UK MP Sir David Amess’s hard-hitting questions were curtailed by an Islamic jihadi. Other notable acts of jihad include the Charlie Hebdo killings (for drawing a picture of Mohammed). These cases illustrate the cost of “looking too closely” at Islamic doctrine. The Commonwealth and Australia’s leaders risk this implied pressure and backlash of Koranic proportions for looking for the root causes.
Educational Omissions and the Paradox
Education has failed for decades. CSPII’s review of 21 years of Victorian Islamic studies shows systemic omissions: only ~1.5% of exam questions addressed non-Muslims (64% of Koranic content), while violent doctrines and Political Islam (51% of texts on non-Muslims) are largely ignored. Curricula teach devotional practices but omit what Islamic doctrine says about non-Muslims and especially Jews, which exactly what is driving the Jew-hatred and cohesion problems. This selective education mirrors broader avoidance: post-9/11, parliamentary calls for doctrinal inquiry gave way to euphemisms, silence, and worse still, omissions. Jihad cases (e.g., Roche, Thomas) cited ideological motivation, yet doctrine vanished from public discourse.
The Australian Way: Eyes on the Ball
Like a footballer marking under pressure, His Royal Highness King Charles III and Mr. Albanese have kept focus on the “ball” – the drivers of Jew-hatred. Implied pressure from global jihad statistics and doctrinal sensitivity tempts avoidance. But establishing the Royal Commission rejects this. It demands full disclosure from primary sources (Koran, Hadith, Sira) over sanitized narratives.
True education on Islamic doctrine is needed. The Commission can recalibrate by examining Political Islam in a critical manner and without self-censorship. His Royal Highness and Mr Albanese’s move is not recklessness but rather leadership of the highest order.
We must all support this bravery. Understanding the Islamic doctrine is essential for social cohesion and security. Only then can we really confront the threat it poses.
